Danny Janssen (’54) deflects the compliment when people praise his work. “I’ve never really felt like I was the one doing anything,” said Janssen. “It’s God working through us.”
The 1954 Concordia alumnus has long practiced the Christian principles he learned at school - as he did when he made entertainment history by integrating a cartoon rock band. The real-estate developer, composer and music producer is still at work writing lyrics imbued with an upbeat message. If you’re not familiar with his name, you know Janssen’s music. His lyrics included tunes for TV’s “The Partridge Family,” “Scooby Doo,” and “Josie and the Pussycats.” This last, a comicbook girl band, became a Saturday morning cartoon show and then a reallife bubble-gum pop recording group, cutting an album and six singles for Capitol Records in 1970.

With his Theatre degree in hand, Phoenix, Ariz. native Aaron Singleton (’06) set his sites on a professional acting career. His dreams soon began to take shape when he landed a role as an extra in a Universal Pictures film, “The Kingdom.”But, those first steps as a professional actor led him to an unexpected new role—volunteer missionary.
On the set of “The Kingdom,”Aaron befriended other extras who were Muslim and felt called to serve—to be witness to people outside of the Christian church. “Within every class I had at Concordia, I found a professor who encouraged me to trust in God and pursue whatever it was that was on my heart at the time.”Aaron followed his heart, and his journey has taken him to Kazakhstan through the LCMS World Mission’s Ablaze! movement where he teaches English in the predominantly Muslim country. The Ablaze! movement will bring the Gospel to 100 million uncommitted people by 2017. Aaron said the experience is both challenging and rewarding and offers new discoveries each day.
When Concordia music grads enter the workforce - as everything from parish music directors, music educators, music ministry, performers and more - their knowledge, ability and solid preparation all are practical proof of the strength of Concordia’s music program.
