Building on a strong foundation and solid research, the College of Education has launched four new graduate programs aimed at education practitioners offering them six off-campus locations across the metro area.

“We contacted, queried and listened to professional educators in the field and we designed graduate programs that those educators need and want,” said Lonn Maly, dean of the College of Education. “We have met those needs and wants and consequently have enrolled more than 275 new graduate students in the College of Education at Concordia University since May.”

The demand for advanced professional education is being met by bringing classes to students’ backyard. Classes are held in locations where students are spending their day teaching—Edina, Brooklyn Park, Burnsville, Elk River, Owatonna and Hutchinson. A total of 19 cohorts have formed including four on campus. The new master’s degrees in Education being offered include Differentiated Instruction, Early Childhood Education, Classroom Instruction (with a K-12 Reading License option) and Educational Leadership.

The programs have been designed to mirror the traditional academic calendar which allows students to maintain their cherished summer and Christmas breaks. Classes are held one night a week over approximately 24 months and are taught by Concordia professors as well as education leaders in the districts where classes are being held.

“The graduate programs in Early Childhood and Family Life Education have been strong for a number of years and it was time for us to diversify our curricular offerings to meet the needs and interests of more professional educators,” Maly said. Maly said he is confident that these programs will offer much greater recognition for all programs at Concordia.
