Program Teaches Youth Environmental Stewardship

Fifty local middle school students are getting a hands-on lesson in financial and environmental stewardship by participating in a program developed by Concordia Natural Science professor Dr. Dale Trapp and funded by a $63,750 grant from Thrivent Financial for Lutherans.

Environmental StewardshipDuring the two-year program, 23 students in grades 5-8 from Trinity First School in Minneapolis and 27 seventh-graders from Central Lutheran School in St. Paul will restore nearly three acres of land at the Concordia University Natural Science Research Station in Lindstrom, Minn., to its native state as prairie land.

In addition to their environmental work, each student will receive a $50 stipend. Working in groups, their stipends will be “seed money” for a fundraising venture, proceeds from which they will donate to the charity of their choice.
