Chapel Enhancement Construction Begins
Construction recently began on the Chapel Enhancement Project, which will provide a 3,500 square foot expansion to create a new fellowship hall, and an additional 3,500 square foot unfinished lower level.
The expansion will allow worshippers to gather to talk and share as a community of believers, further enhancing interpersonal relationships and the spiritual life of the campus community.
The Chapel Enhancement Project will create a more flexible space that will enrich daily worship and expand the ability of the chapel to serve the needs of the campus community. The project will add restrooms, a kitchenette, a multipurpose meeting space, upgrades to mechanical and A/V systems, and handicapped access.
Plans include construction of an outdoor fellowship plaza to provide even greater usability and flexibility in the uses of the building. Crowned Column, by noted sculptor Paul Granlund, will grace the west entry of the plaza, providing an elegant and meaningful counterpoint to the inset cross at the building’s new main entrance.
The existing chapel space meets the daily worship needs of the campus, and its central campus location and superb acoustics are ideal for small music recitals, choral ensembles and recordings.
Additionally, alumni have expressed a desire to preserve the existing worship space to honor its pivotal role in campus life and its historical significance as the first building erected by Concordia.
The Chapel Enhancement Project will be funded by gifts from alumni, employees and friends of the university who have enthusiastically endorsed the project.Anticipated completion of the construction is spring 2007.
